12. A very short, but very interesting, biography of St. Robert Bellarmine

(I first read that biography in the Sydney Catholic Weekly last Sunday.) These are the parts which were of most interest to me and for which I log that biography here:
13. Two recent opinions pieces from Mr. Steyn
13.1 "Using rights to gag free speech"

(Needless to say, I reject that 'freedom of speech' is a true moral freedom; I mainly log that web-page for its information on examples of anti-'hate-speech' action.)

His most famous work is his three-volume Disputations on the Controversies of the Christian Faith. Particularly noteworthy are the sections on the temporal power of the pope and the role of the laity. He incurred the anger of monarchists in England and France by showing the divine-right-of-kings theory untenable. He developed the theory of the indirect power of the pope in temporal affairs; although he was defending the pope against the Scottish philosopher Barclay, he also incurred the ire of Pope Sixtus V.Labels: Papacy, political science, St. Robert Bellarmine, theology, William Barclay
[...] ... The process for his canonization was begun in 1627 but was delayed until 1930 for political reasons, stemming from his writings. In 1930, Pope Pius XI canonized him and the next year declared him a doctor of the Church.

Regarding item 13.1: One of the letters in The Australian today gives a counterpoint:
"Selective on hate speech"

Regarding item 13.2: Mr. Muehlenberg has published a blog post on the matter:
"Abortion One Day, Infanticide the Next"
http://www.billmuehlenberg.com/2011/09/14/abortion-one-day-infanticide-the-next/
And here's a counterpoint to the counterpoint (under the heading "PC is about bullying"):
